Leith (Scotland) Observer

A recent issue of your paper contained a report of an address by a clergyman, in which a number of incorrect statements are made regarding Christian Science and Christian Scientists. I trust you will allow me to reply to them as follows:—

(1) The clergyman says that Christian Science "professes to reduce the phenomena of supernatual healing to a system." But in the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. xi), Mrs. Eddy says Christian healing is "not supernatural, but supremely natural;" and there is nothing in the sayings of Jesus to lead one to think that he regarded his works as supernatural.

(2) The clergyman next says that Christian Science has "so little sense of proportion." This is probably a reference to the fact that Christian Science denies the evidence of the senses. Jesus said of Jairus' daughter: "The demsel is not dead, but sleepeth." The narrative continues, "And they laughed him to scorn." Why did they laugh? Because they believed the evidence of the material senses. Jesus did not allow such evidence to control his thought; and Christian Scientists are trying to follow in his steps.
