Signs of the Times

[Rev. Thomas Yates in the West London Observer, London, England]

The Rev. Thomas Yates said there was one vital question before all churches to-day: how the Christian religion might come with more vitality and power in order to capture the mind and imagination of the world. It was true that Christianity had to face great apathy, but there were undoubtedly many signs of a religious revival. What could they do to help and serve the present generation? He believed they had to get and to give a clearer and more convincing and intellectual presentation of Christianity. There were some people, continued the speaker, who thought that the growth of modern knowledge was shaking the intellectual foundations of Christianity. That was not only a mistake but absurd. The essential verities of the Christian religion were never so reinforced and confirmed by the growth of knowledge as at the present time. Modern thought was creating an atmosphere in which it was far easier for Christianity to state its case than ever before. Speaking on personal evangelism, Mr. Yates declared that the evidence of religion was in what it did in the lives of men and women. "We must be straight with ourselves and deal first with the ugly things in our own lives. The world needs a new understanding of Jesus Christ, and a readjustment of its moral values till they become like his."
