Among the Churches

Current Notes

Winlock, Wash. (Society). — Christian Science was first brought to Winlock in 1898, when a former resident of California returned home. Her healing work among many of those suffering with physical ills caused them to take up the study of Christian Science. The first meetings were held in homes in 1899. The attendance increased; and in 1903 a lot was purchased, and a little one-room edifice built on it. Interest grew, good work was done in healing, and in 1904 a church was organized, which, on account of a change in by-laws, was changed to a society in 1909. Activity of thought was manifested in steady progress, and in 1921 the first building was moved back, and, due to a very generous gift from the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy, the erection of a new one was begun. The spirit of perfect unity and harmony that has characterized this church since it was organized marked the building of this material structure. Among this little band of earnest, fruitful workers can now be numbered several practitioners.

Since the beginning of this organization, free literature has been distributed, free lectures given for the public since 1906, contributions sent to assist in the work being done among the prisoners at the Walla Walla penitentiary; and all calls from The Mother Church, including the Camp Welfare and war work, have met with a liberal response. The children of the Sunday school delight in contributing toward the church expenses, and they paid for the fixtures in the building. Those who have united their efforts in the building of this church express their gratitude for the guidance and presence of divine Love in the words of their revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in her last edition of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. ix), when, in speaking of herself, she said, "To-day, though rejoicing in some progress, she still finds herself a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ."

All obligations being paid, this building was dedicated on September 10, 1922. — Winlock News.
