Self-government

"The hour has struck for Christian Scientists to do their own work; to appreciate the signs of the times; to demonstrate self-knowledge and self-government; and to demonstrate, as this period demands, over all sin, disease, and death." So writes Mrs. Eddy on page 317 of "Miscellaneous Writings." Herein she states a demand that will not be silenced, since only through such demonstration will any and every individual be redeemed from all evil. This admonition of our Leader goes hand in hand with Jesus' words, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

Such God-given commands as these cannot be cast aside lightly, or pushed out of the mental horizon with a thought that to-morrow will be time enough to undertake their fulfillment. Paul says, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation;" and there is no moment so opportune as the present to accept to the fullest the responsibility which these commands place upon every Christian Scientist. A world's salvation is hanging in the balance waiting for the proof that Christian Science is the way out of all evil; and it is only as the individual student awakens to the possibility and necessity of proving all things, that all men will be won to Truth.

Self-government sounds like something quite easy of accomplishment, for most men believe they can think as they choose. They believe they are generally independent thinkers, and that they entertain only the thoughts which please them. While they may believe this, without the understanding of Christian Science they are at the beck and call of all the supposititious beliefs of the mortal or carnal mind, and are, in consequence, constantly reaping sin, sickness, and death as the fruits of such haphazard thinking.
