I first heard of Christian Science in January, 1891
I first heard of Christian Science in January, 1891. I had made a study of the Bible and had marked all the places where healing was mentioned. I heard there was a man in Kansas that could heal by prayer; this was what I was most interested in. I wrote a letter to this man and he sent me some Christian Science tracts and a Journal. Oh, how I rejoiced as I read them over and over! I knew I had found the truth that I had sought and longed for. We sent for "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I have made a daily study of this book and the Bible ever since. We never gave a dose of medicine in our family after this book came to our home.
During the darkest hours that I have passed through, these words from Science and Health (p. 261) were with me when I would fall asleep, and were being repeated in my thoughts when I would awake, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." I did not meet with a Christian Scientist till about six years after I began the study, and although we had a large family, and errors of almost every description appeared, I never called for help till that time. I have only been in bed with sickness once, then only for about an hour, since I began this study. I have one daughter who never tasted medicine; nine grandchildren that know nothing about material remedies; four sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law who depend altogether on divine Love for help. I took class instruction in 1904. Many, many have been our blessings, and although our neighbors do not seem to take much interest, yet the seed has been sown and I know "God will give the increase;" even if it does take patient waiting we must continue to let our "light shine." I am very thankful to God for so many blessings; to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her patient work in bringing the understanding of Truth to a seemingly dark world; to the faithful workers at headquarters; to all who helped me, and all those who are working to lift mankind into the glorious light of God.
