The Bible

One fact which has greatly impressed the interested observer of the Christian Science movement is the impetus which it has given to the systematic study of the Bible. As a result of the redemptive work of Christian Science, experienced in the healing of moral and physical ills, thousands of people who before knew little or nothing of the Bible are now its constant and faithful students—visible evidence and testimony of the truth of the first tenet of Christian Science (Science and Health, p. 497), which declares that, "as adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life."

No one who is familiar with Mrs. Eddy's life and writings can be in any doubt as to the place which the Bible occupied in the thought and affections of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. It is well to remember that after her discovery, three whole years were given by her to the almost exclusive study of the Bible, in which she found the answer to the question as to how she was healed. She saw, as had not been seen since the days of the apostles, the significance and the science of the struggle, victory, and vision there recorded, and we can dimly picture the unfolding beauty and wonder of that study as we measure our debt to the textbook after feeling the divine touch of Christian Science in our own experience.

The Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" are the permanent preachers in all Christian Science churches, and the Lesson-Sermons with their Bible references extending from Genesis to Revelation are now studied daily all over the world. This study is indispensable and its value and importance cannot be overestimated, but there may be some whose reading is largely confined to the passages there given and who are not fully awake to a privilege and opportunity just at hand in supplementing this work with a more extended and detailed study of the various books of the Old and New Testaments, as well as of Mrs. Eddy's writings other than Science and Health. Such study will make available priceless treasures of Christian experience and may unfold revelations of Truth and open vistas of spiritual visions which were before unknown.
