Footsteps

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way;"—so sang the psalmist, and there is no Christian who has not longed to make this experience his own. It is a simple truism that no desirable destination can be reached without taking every necessary footstep thereto. One of our poets has as truly written:—

"Heaven is not reached at a single bound,
But we build the ladder by which we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted skies,
And we mount to its summit round by round."

There is no phrase which their beloved Leader has used which is more frequently on the lips of Christian Scientists than the one, "From sense to Soul." In Miscellany (p. 117), she says: "I left Boston in the height of prosperity to retreat from the world, and to seek the one divine Person, whereby and wherein to show others the footsteps from sense to Soul. To give me this opportunity is all that I ask of mankind." That she accomplished this tremendous purpose, has been proved beyond a question. There is no Christian Scientist who is not endeavoring to walk in the way she has thus shown and to take each footstep under God's perfect guidance in the way she has pointed out. Whatever his experience may be, he constantly takes account of his own spiritual condition and endeavors to find where he can place his feet more firmly in the only way of life, the way in which no footstep can be properly taken which is not one of self-abnegation.
