While the Rev. Mr.—may choose to blame ignorance...

Sacramento (Calif.) Union

While the Rev. Mr.—may choose to blame ignorance of the Bible for the growth of Christian Science, he certainly cannot reverse his indictment and hold Christian Science responsible for ignorance of the Bible, for every one knows that Christian Science demands that its students study the Bible and acquaint themselves with its teachings. In fact an adequate understanding of Christian Science can be acquired in no other way. Understanding the Bible and understanding Christian Science are one and the same thing, and the practice of Christian Science in improving health and elevating morals is simply a revival of the practice of original Christianity, which combined healing with teaching and refused to content itself with preaching only.

Jesus and the early Christians did something far more vital than merely preach and ask that their doctrines be taken on faith; they taught the Science of Christianity, and, what is even more important, they actually applied it in healing sickness and in overcoming other human shortcomings and difficulties. This is what gave the remarkable impulse to Christianity in the first three centuries. It is what now gives impulse to Christian Science. It is not ignorance of the Bible that gives Christian Science headway as this clergyman fancies: it is the understanding of the Bible and the putting of its teachings into operation.
