Great Divide
The whole world has been, and is yet to a large extent, in bondage to sickness, sin, and other evil conditions, owing to man-made laws or beliefs. In their endeavor to overcome these evil conditions mankind have prepared and used oceans of medicines of every conceivable nature, and have observed many varieties of religious forms and beliefs without getting at the root of their trouble. However, when Christ Jesus came offering mankind release from their bondage by striking the shackles of materialism from human consciousness, he met with opposition instead of universal acceptance and glad acclaim.
Similarly Mrs. Eddy was opposed instead of assisted, when, after she had discovered the Science of Christianity as preached and practiced by Jesus the Christ, she proclaimed man's freedom in such words as these from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 227): "Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!' Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free! This is your divine right. The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being."
Although mankind wish to be freed from all evil and discord, the human, material, so-called mind, being the counterfeit of the spiritual, divine Mind, resents and resists the way of emancipation proffered by Christian Science, because of its spiritual basis and method and because the operation of God's law of harmony and perfection rejects, reverses, and utterly discredits material sense testimony. The acceptance of this material sense testimony by mankind has brought verdicts of condemnation, such as hopeless invalidism, incurable disease, uncontrollable evil tendencies and desires, great injustice; in fact, all the woes of mankind depend solely upon material sense for their claim to authority and existence.
