I have long felt a desire to express my gratitude for and appreciation of Christian Science, but I never could tell of all the blessings received, as they have been so numerous. Many times at our Wednesday evening testimony meetings I have borne witness to the truth and healing power of Christian Science, and there is scarcely a day passes that I do not tell some person of the great benefits I have received through its study.
It is nineteen years since Christian Science was first presented to me. I was then in a very darkened condition spiritually, and physically was almost a wreck. I was suffering from a complication of diseases, the most distressing of which, and the one which caused me the most trouble, was what doctors call nervous sick headache. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and attended church services. One of the passages in the textbook which appealed to me from the first was this: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).I thought up to that time that my only need was physical healing, but soon found after studying this beautiful passage that my need was not so much physical healing as spiritual enlightenment and understanding, which I gained by a study of the Bible and Science and Health. I found that as I gained more understanding of God, the physical condition responded in proportion as I put this knowledge into practice and watched the mental conditions instead of the physical. I learned that Christian Science was not trying to heal physical ills, but its mission was to destroy what produced these so-called ills,—envy, hatred, anger, resentment, and a host of other wrong conditions of thought which beset mortal existence. After working along these lines for some time, the sick headaches were completely overcome, as were many other so-called ailments.
For the physical healing I am, of course, very grateful, but words fail to express my gratitude for the spiritual awakening; for this I am most thankful to God and grateful to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose inspiring publications are leading people out of darkness into light. Christian Science has indeed brought to me, as we read in Isaiah, "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."
