"Giving and hearing"

In the Christian Science Society of which the writer is a member this statement is made from the pulpit at each Wednesday evening meeting: "These meetings are held for the purpose of giving and hearing testimonies as to the re-generating and healing power of Christian Science." These words have brought to the writer some very uplifting thoughts, and in pondering them the word "giving" has taken on a larger meaning. To be able to give rightly we must first of all possess love and also the conviction that by giving we shall bless or make some one happy. To give something to another we must stretch forth our hand and open it. When we do this the hand is open to receive. Without opening the hand we cannot receive anything.

The word "regenerating," as used in this connection, is named before the word "healing," and this caused the writer to recollect the time when first she began to study Christian Science. Many years of suffering and sorrow had held her down, no light was to be found in the religion of her childhood, and life as it then appeared had for her no meaning; it was filled with all sorts of difficulties. When studying Christian Science there was at first no thought of being freed from sickness,—this seemed too good to be true; but there was a heartfelt desire to learn if this new teaching could point out the way in which could be found the God who is Love, who does not send sorrow and evil upon His children. When reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, the desire was awakened to lay off all evil thoughts and to become more Christlike.

This desire was the incipient regenerating power, which must always precede healing. When thought becomes more and more filled with love for the true and the good, there will be no place left for evil; and so the writer next realized Truth's healing power, as one evil after the other vanished, until she could rejoice in perfect health. She is very thankful that Christian Science is bringing the "regenerating and healing power" to all who are willing to hear its message and to give it out. Furthermore, it is opening up the understanding of the Bible, and through this understanding all are able to see God as ever present Love.
