Three years ago, while working as telegraph operator, I...
Three years ago, while working as telegraph operator, I was stricken with physical and mental breakdown, so that I was unable to work and became very much worried over my condition. I had heard something of Christian Science, but like many people gave it little consideration; however, one Sunday in March, 1913, having spent a very restless night, I decided to see a practitioner in another city. I arrived at her home exhausted, but after a while began to respond to the truth. The practitioner then told me about God and the teachings of Christian Science. Before this I had only a faint idea as to what God is; in fact I knew very little of the Bible and its teachings.
I had been in the habit of going out with boys to saloons, thinking them places of entertainment. I drank, smoked, and used profane language, and called it all having a good time. After the practitioner had read and talked to me for a while I told her I wished to refrain from all bad habits and asked her to help me overcome error by applying the truth. Immediately my desire for drinking, smoking, and swearing left me, and since then, by the help of God, I have had no trouble in resisting temptation. I have held close to the teachings of Christian Science as found in Science and Health, and have thus learned how to watch and pray, whereas previously I was ignorant of how to pray or how to approach God for help. To-day I am a strong, healthy man. We have fully relied on Christian Science since I turned to it for help. My wife has had many proofs of the power of Truth, and we have three girls, all well and healthy.
Words cannot express my thankfulness to God for all these blessings, and my gratitude to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the wonderful healing truth.
