From Our Exchanges

[New-Church Messenger]

Our Lord day by day preached about his kingdom. The people thought of a natural, civil, and political kingdom. The Lord, using the same term, meant something entirely different. He meant a new, a spiritual rule and government, a new life; a kingdom of conscience, not a kingdom of coercion and government by force of arms. He meant a new church in which new principles of life would first be accepted. As they were applied a new spiritual force would develop a new civilization in the world.

As the people listened a differentiation took place. Those of a purely Jewish type of mind clung to the literal idea; but others began to see a new light shining from the prophecies. They saw a more spiritual meaning within the letter. They saw that this spiritual idea was embodied in types and figures, in symbols and correspondences, that these were the means or vessels to convey the more precious truths within. So they became truly disciples of the Lord and entered into his kingdom, that is, into the Christian church.
