Mind's Ideas Omnipresent
In the study of the story of Hagar's experience in the wilderness the young student of Christian Science may obtain much encouragement. How often does one whose feet have strayed into the wilderness of human doubt and fear cry out in anguish as did this Egyptian woman! All about is the bleak loneliness of defeated aims, the doubt of God's protecting care, the myriad fears of a mortal's blinded vision. Had one been near to Hagar and assured her of the existence of the well of water from which later she filled her bottle, she would not have believed what as yet her eyes had not beheld. In the beginning of one's journey out of the senses it is not always easy to grasp the fact that because Mind is omnipresent all of Mind's ideas are also omnipresent.
On page 597 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy speaks of wilderness first as "loneliness; doubt; darkness;" farther on as "the vestibule in which a material sense of things disappears, and spiritual sense unfolds the great facts of existence." Hagar found her spiritual sight while encompassed by her wilderness. That the well of water was a spiritual idea, existing forever present in Mind, was proven as clearly in Hagar's case as was the truth, which Jesus established for all time, that food for the multitude is an omnipresent fact, waiting only the unfoldment of spiritual vision to bring it into practical demonstration.
The world can never measure its debt of gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for bringing to groping mortals the wonder contained in her words, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Science and Health, p. 468). This is the truth which opens prison doors, sets captives free, causes the lame to leap and the weary to rejoice,—this great declaration that Mind and its ideas alone exist, and exist throughout all space and time. And not of lesser moment are her words on page 280 of Science and Health: "All things beautiful and harmless are ideas of Mind. Mind creates and multiplies them, and the product must be mental."
