The Christian Science Monitor

As recorded in the Bible, the history of the children of Israel shows the paramount necessity of allegiance to God and reliance on His goodness and power under all circumstances. The effect of every good or evil act of the Hebrew people is depicted as the natural result of the motive governing the act. When the people were obedient to God they prospered, when disobedient they suffered; and this record of the governing influence of God in human affairs has been of inestimable moral value to those desirous of choosing the way of life.

In The Christian Science Monitor, our great international daily, we have a current history of the moving pageant of human affairs, inspired by the same clear understanding of the allness of Principle which guided the Biblical narrator. It is to-day the one newspaper which embraces in its scope the progressive political advancement of the whole world. It has not only taken its place in the forefont of journalism, but its function there is unique as an exponent of Principle entirely outside the ranks of partisanship or prejudice, and beyond commercialism.

Christian Scientists who are making "good will toward men" a vital part of all their thinking, who rejoice in the truth of our Leader's words on page 13 of Science and Health, "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals," naturally have a keen interest in the struggle for social betterment and for emancipation from mental bondage which is going on all over the world, and every issue of the Monitor tells of some step of progress being taken somewhere. For instance, English educators lift their voices for more and better schools; a South American republic gains a greater measure of religious freedom; two other republics enter into closer relations and seal their bond of peace with a treaty; France shows that she is not asleep on the school question, and guards more jealously her children from clerical interference; Bible societies send in one year several hundred thousand copies of the Scriptures to China; a large number of Mexican women from different provinces meet for the discussion of social and political problems.
