Goshen (Ind.) Democrat

The statement, "The coroner has started an investigation," has for a long time accompanied the reports of death under Christian Science treatment, especially if the coroner is a medical doctor. While the law gives coroners the right, and in some cases makes it obligatory for them, to make an investigation when death occurs, special emphasis is usually laid on the investigation when Christian Science is concerned, manifestly for the purpose of giving the impression that a law has been violated if any other than the practice of medicine has been used in treating the sick. As a matter of fact, however, Christian Science is an entirely lawful method of treating disease, and it would be just as reasonable for Christian Scientists to insist upon an investigation and herald the fact when some one passes on under medical treatment without the presence and ministry of a Christian Scientist.
