The statement is made in an article in your issue of July 16, that "Christian Scientists throughout the world will observe this day as the anniversary of the birth of Mary Baker Eddy." The average Christian Scientist does not even know the exact date of the birth of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. On the subject of recording ages Mrs. Eddy herself has said on page 246 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Never record ages. Chronological data are no part of the vast forever. Time-tables of birth and death are so many conspiracies against manhood and womanhood."

The further statement that "mind over matter" is the foundation upon which the Christian Science church is built might be confusing to some of your readers who do not understand the distinction made by Christian Science between the divine Mind, or God, and the so-called mortal mind. In teaching the allness of Mind and the nothingness of matter, Christian Science, it should be clearly understood, refers to the divine Mind, the Mind which was in Christ Jesus, and not to the mortal or "carnal" mind, which St. Paul says is "enmity against God." Christian Scientists understand that in the degree that they put off or reject the carnal mind and its testimony they demonstrate that matter and its attendant ills are unreal, since matter is nothing but mortal mind or human thought objectified.

The exercise of human will power in the endeavor to dominate matter is not Christian Science; in fact, the various phases of mortal mind cure, such as suggestion, hypnotism, and the like, have nothing in common with Christian Science Mind-healing and should not be confused therewith. That Christian Science healing is based upon a clear understanding and application of the words and works of Christ Jesus is proved by the fact that through its ministrations all manner of sickness and disease, both acute and chronic, are being permanently overcome in the manner prescribed by the Master and without resort to material means. The teachings of this religion are epitomized in the words spoken by Christ Jesus over nineteen centuries ago: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
