The Lectures

The remarks of Mrs. Sarah W. Taylor in introducing John W. Doorly at a lecture on Christian Science given in the edifice of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, were as follows:—

The gospel of St. Luke in recording the last interview between Jesus and his disciples, an intimate, sacred interview just before their final parting, concludes with this statement: "Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." The same statement might be made in relation to Christian Science and the service it is today performing for its disciples. Christian Science is opening their understanding that they may understand the spiritual import of the Scriptures. It is enabling them to lay hold on the Bible promises and make them effective in the healing of sorrow and sickness and sin. It is teaching them how to reflect the unerring intelligence of divine Mind in solving whatever problems may confront them, whether the problems are of world magnitude or relate to the minutiæ of the daily round and common task.

Christian Science is teaching its followers to understand the promise of Isaiah, "The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever." In the midst of world conflict and confusion Christian Scientists are grateful to rest in this promise. Christian Science is also making its adherents more alert to the command of the Master, who bade his followers go into all the world to preach the gospel and heal the sick.
