Through the reading of a testimony in a copy of the...
Through the reading of a testimony in a copy of the Sentinel which was mailed to me by a friend about five years ago, I was induced to try Christian Science as a cure for a painful and, according to the doctors, dangerous stomach and bowel disorder. I was healed in one month's treatment, and a severe nervous trouble was overcome at the same time. The study of Christian Science has been kept up ever since, with most happy results. For about two years after beginning this study I had to use glasses to read ordinary newspaper print; then one day I picked up a paper and started to read without my glasses and was much surprised to find that I could read better without them than with them. For two years I have not put them on, and can now read small Bible print with ease; in fact, I believe my sight is just as good as it was in boyhood, though I am to material sense quite old.
Since I have been studying Science a number of small accidents, such as cuts and bruises, have been overcome with no other help than the power of divine Love. A bar of steel hit me on the left foot, breaking one of the small bones of the instep. The pain for a moment was severe, but as soon as I was able to collect my thoughts enough to declare the truth the pain ceased, and I was able to continue my duties the rest of the day. That evening the pain returned with even greater severity, but it was again overcome, so that I could go to sleep, and the next morning the foot was so far recovered that I put on my shoe and walked to work without even limping. It has never given me any further trouble. Considering the severity of the blow and the resulting injury, the healing seems to me nothing less than marvelous.
In an accident on an elevator my right leg was broken between the ankle and the knee, and the surgeon who set the leg said he would open it up and fasten the bones together with small plates of steel; but he finally decided to give it a chance to heal without doing that. It healed, but very slowly, and five months passed before I could go back to work. The slow healing was doubtless due to the fact that all this time I was influenced by those about me, who feared that the injury would never heal and that I would finally lose the leg.
