For some time I have desired to give my testimony of healing, first that God may be glorified and that the great truth which Christ Jesus taught through his life may be demonstrated as the true Principle to live by, and secondly that perchance some one suffering from similar ills may be helped by my experience.
More than fourteen years ago I was told by a prominent surgeon in Chicago that to obtain relief it would be necessary for me to have certain glands in my body removed. I had suffered long and intensely from these swelling up like so many boils for about six weeks at a time. Later on, one of my lungs became affected from an acute trouble of a recurrent type, and I was advised to go to Phoenix, Ariz., for a period of five years. Again it was the judgment of three good physicians that I was affected by a malignant growth, and I was informed that the part should be removed at once in order to save my life.
About this time a Christian Science friend made frequent calls at our house and tried to induce me to take treatment, but this I refused to do. The so-called malignant growth, however, soon began to disappear, and I am now certain that it was the impersonal denial by my friend which healed the disease, for I neither had the operation nor went to Phoenix. I had no sympathy either with the idea of an operation or with Christian Science, but a little later on interest in my recovery led me to the study of this Science to see for myself what it was like. A single treatment relieved me of bowel disorder and hemorrhoids, from which I had suffered for five years. During that time I was anything but an agreeable person to live with, since my nerves were in a dreadful condition. In order to sleep at all, I had been resorting to tablets every three hours, besides a sedative at night.
