The-Medical Press and Circular,

Christian Science does not profess to cure disease by a miracle, as a writer avers. No science professes anything at any time. It is always the student of a given science who professes to attain results in proportion to his understanding of the science. Those who have studied Christian Science and have thereby gained sufficient understanding of divine Principle, have been able to destroy the manifestation of every disease known to medical science. The volume of evidence has grown for the last forty years till it has reached such vast proportions that for one to acknowledge ignorance of the fact is equivalent to acknowledging that one is not well informed.

I would like to ask your writer if he believes that Jesus could or could not have healed instantaneously any of the diseases enumerated in his last letter? If his answer is in the affirmative, then he must admit that the possibility, method, and power are present for all to avail themselves of today, as stated in the New Testament. If his answer is in the negative, then he must admit that Christianity is the biggest fraud ever presented to humanity. The demonstrators of Christian Science are proving that the word of God in the Bible is true, and is applicable to every human need today as it has been throughout all time.

Our critic will find my definition of a miracle, which he terms "grotesquely absurd," in Webster's dictionary; it is not original. He admits that the latest discoveries in the realm of natural science would seem miraculous to our ancestors or to those who have not been "instructed in the fundamental facts of science." It is precisely for the same reason that he considers the works performed through an understanding of Christian Science to be miraculous. He does not in the least understand the fundamental facts of this Science. If he would only take the trouble to study the subject and gain a knowledge of these facts, he would be in a position to understand how the works are done, and his sense of mystery and doubt would vanish. He will have to deal with the theology of Christian Science if he wishes to understand its methods. Mrs. Eddy writes on page 138 of Science and Health, that it was the "theology of Jesus which healed the sick and the sinning," and she continues, "It is his theology in this book and the spiritual meaning of this theology, which heals the sick and causes the wicked to 'forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts.'"
