Assurance of Immortality

How pitifully desolate the mentality in which the uplook and outreach of the nobler self has been so mocked, the aspirations so snuffed out by the disheartenings of earthly experience as to be frightened into utter silence, and the thought of death as effecting individual annihilation become the sole remaining comfort !

It is apparent that such an entry into "desert despair" could not be made by any person who had witnessed the sovereignty of Life which Christ Jesus brought into demonstration, and which lit up the otherwise darkening clouds of persecution that loomed so ominously upon the early church. Today as then the proof that existence is independent of material law, which appears when those condemned to affliction or death find freedom through the realization of Truth in Christian Science, renders possible the absolute assurance of the ancient sage, and the joyous cry is again heard in the corridors of consciousness, "I know that my redeemer liveth."

It has been said that the Master predicated immortality "as naturally as a bird predicates flight when it feels its wings;" and we do well to consider the reasons for this fact. Manifestly his certainty was grounded in his understanding of the nature of man and his relation to God, and it is just here that following him Christian Science also brings human assurance into the realm of certitude.
