THE LECTURES
The opportunity of hearing Christian Science discussed attracted a very large audience to a lecture at the Hove town hall. The Brighton First Church of Christ, Scientist, had secured a visit by Bliss Knapp of Boston, U. S. A., and he placed the tenets of his church before the audience in a noteworthy lecture which commanded the attention of the hearers during the whole of his discourse.
The lecturer was briefly introduced by Algergnon Hervey-Bathurst, of London, who said that in the forty-six years which had elapsed since Mrs. Eddy gave Christian Science to the world, it had encircled the globe. Thinking people recognized that it was a correct and practical reiteration of the teaching of Christ Jesus, and this by reason of what Christian Science had accomplished. The trend of human thought of recent years was to reach out for something higher, something better, and more reliable and practical than the dogmas and theories of the past. If they looked back over the history of the world, they would find an innumerable quantity of revolutionary movements along this line, but in the van of them all stood Christian Science, because it formed a proof of true Christianity demanded by Christ in breaking the fetters of sickness, as well as of sin or discord; and above all, it destroyed fear. From his personal experience he knew that Christian Science healed the sick, even when the best available material aids had failed. He himself had been healed in just that way. Of far more moment than the bodily healing, was the making of character, which was inseparable from Christian Science. This wonderful formation of character, which the student of Christian Science alone could appreciate, was what called for expressions of heartfelt gratitude. Christian Science had been misinterpreted and misrepresented, and statements in the press had set forth only too accurately what Christian Science was not and what it did not teach. It was because of this, the speaker explained, that Mr. Knapp was engaged in a lecture tour around the world.—
