The explanations given by the reverend gentleman are the very antipoders of the teaching of Christian Science. He leads his hearers to believe that Christian Science rejects the teaching of Christ, whereas every student of Christian Science accepts Christ as "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (Science and Health, p. 332). Jesus said, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." Christian Science is a system consistently deduced from a given premise; that premise is the definition of God as Spirit; from this premise Mrs. Eddy has drawn all her conclusions; they are logical, consistent, and demonstrable, and coincide in every respect with the words and works of our Master.
Christian Science affirms that sin, sickness, and death are not the creations of God, but are the emanations of that carnal mind which Paul declares "is enmity against God." We recognize that these errors must be overcome and destroyed, and that we must "Put off the old man with his deeds." This Science brings to the consciousness of the sick as well as the sinful, the fact that he is a slave, not to a real, but to an unreal master, and gives him a sense of the omnipotence of God whereby the seeming reality of evil is destroyed. Through this realization, men are released from the bondage of an unreal master, and are ushered "into the glorious liberty of the children of God."
Christian Science does not teach that "sickness is only imaginary." If the reverend gentleman had read the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, he would have found these words: "Sickness is neither imaginary nor unreal,—that is, to the frightened, false sense of the patient. Sickness is more than fancy; it is solid conviction. It is therefore to be dealt with through right apprehension of the truth ofbeing" (p. 460). There are today unnumbered thousands who have been raised from beds of suffering after having exhausted all medical skill, and who have turned to Christian Science in their last extremity, and have found it to be a system which proves its faith by its works.
