ITEMS OF INTEREST

Referendum on the subject of a permanent tariff commission is very shortly to be taken by the Chamber of Commerce of the United States from its constituent bodies all over the country, so that the vote will be received during the early part of the extra session of Congress. The chamber has taken up the question of banking and currency, and will immediately complete its committee on that subject, so as to be in a position to act upon the bills that may be presented to Congress. There are now three hundred and eighteen organizations enrolled with the chamber, which has constituent bodies in forty-three states, in the District of Columbia, Porto Rico, Hawaii, the Philippine islands, as well as the American Chamber of Commerce in Paris and the Levant.

Secretary of State Bryan has formally notified all diplomatic representatives at Washington of the intention of the United States to recognize the new Chinese republic on April 8, the meeting day of its assembly, and has proposed that all other governments recognize the new republic in concert on that day. At his request, members of most of the foreign embassies and legations in Washington appeared at the state department and were received individually by him. In order to prevent a repetition of the criticism in foreign capitals occasioned by the recent Chinese loan statement, the state department in this instance gave due notice of its intentions regarding China to all interested powers before publication.

Last week, undergraduates of Yale enthusiastically welcomed back to his alma mater former President William Howard Taft. Practically the entire student body, three thousand strong, accompanied by a band, and anequally large number of citizens, were at the station when Mr. Taft and his party arrived from New York.
