Ministers in charge of the orthodox churches complain...
Morning Telegraph
Ministers in charge of the orthodox churches complain that their congregations are small, that there is no enthusiasm any more, and it is hard to stir up an interest in the work of the church and to secure additions to the membership. One of the leading pastors of the city recently announced that he would preach on a topic that should be of interest to every one; and when he entered the pulpit to begin his sermon there were forty-two persons in a church that will seat about eight hundred.
Christian Scientists of this city are making no such complaint; there is hardly room enough in some of their great churches to accommodate the crowds that wish to attend the week-night meetings and the Sunday services. Well may pastors inquire into the reason for the large attendance at the Christian Science churches and the small attendance at their own. The reason is obvious. Christian Science makes a direct appeal on straight lines. Christian Science does not quibble over baptism or close communion or involved doctrines. It does not tell a man he must believe that which his reason tells him he cannot believe; Christian Science does not set itself above the law of the land, and issue dictums regarding marriage and divorce.
What Christian Science does preach is the simplest thing in the world: Get yourself in harmony both in body and spirit with the creator, and walk the straight path, and you not only will find that peace which passes understanding, but you will enjoy good health. Christian Science does not order you to believe anything; it is the rule of common sense that it asks you to follow—that and the golden rule. Do this, and you will be calm and cheerful and well.
