Permit me to thank you profoundly for your timely...
Northern Echo
Permit me to thank you profoundly for your timely protest against newspaper sensationalism. The prejudice and misunderstanding between individuals, societies, and governments can be traced to the avenue which sends its erroneous concepts of persons and things through the consciousness and through the press.
The way to stop this evil tendency is to educate the people to love the good only, as the Bible teaches, and to make clean journalism a necessity in all countries. As you say, what mankind needs is fact (true statements), and then they can form their judgment for themselves. Your words come very near the hearts of the members of our denomination. Only this morning I was called upon to correct an item which appeared in some of the sensational journals to the effect that ninety-eight convicts in the state prison, New Jersey, were Christian Scientists. It was not only an untrue, but an absurd story. The only connection between the New Jersey state prison and Christian Scientists was this: the local church there got the permission of the prison authorities to hold a service in the jail, and ninety-eight convicts volunteered to attend it. The service is now being read every week, and this is a proof of its attractiveness to men who need comfort and help. If they ever become Christian Scientists, they will do so out of their own choice, and it will be because they are healed mortally, and have repented and forsaken their sins.
