[Written for the Sentinel.]

ASSURANCE

Pain, I know thee not;
Get thee behind me.
Darkness, I fear thee not;
The light will find me.

Error, approach me not;
Truth guards the portal.
Flesh, thou enchain'st me not,—
Transient and mortal.

Strength fills me day by day,
Truth doth renew it;
Mine eyes have seen the way,
My steps pursue it.

I know the only One,
Truth that endureth;
Light more than stars or sun,
No cloud obscureth.

Answering the Spirit's call,
Truth faileth never;
Life, substance, All-in-all,—
Love reigneth ever.
