In August, 1907, I went to the Christian Science reading-room...
In August, 1907, I went to the Christian Science reading-room in Washington, D. C., at the request of a gentleman whom I had never seen before, but I was suffering intensely and willing to try anything to get relief. I was wearing dark glasses at the time, my eyes being very sensitive to the light, and was suffering from sleeplessness and nervousness, as a result of hard drinking and fast living. I had tried two doctors, but got no relief, and when the eye trouble came on I did not consult any more physicians, as I did not believe they could do anything for my eyes, having failed to relieve me otherwise.
The lady in charge of the reading-room loaned me a copy of Science and Health and gave me some good advice, but after making several attempts to read I became afraid lest my eyes should grow worse, so I gave up the reading and took treatment from a practitioner, which seemed to have no effect. I left Washington about this time (this all happened in about two weeks) and came to Philadelphia. As time passed, my condition became worse. I had tried glasses without getting relief and was still suffering from nervousness. Finally, in December, 1908, I again turned to Christian Science and took up the study of Science and Health, but did not go to a practitioner. It took about ten days to overcome the fear that my eyes would get worse by reading, but remembering the kind advice of the lady at Washington, I kept on, and while my eyes were not healed, they felt much better, and my condition improved otherwise. I was therefore convinced that if I was faithful I would finally get the healing.
Some time about January, 1910, I forgot all about the eyes, and have felt no trouble since. I had called on several Christian Science practitioners for treatment, but it seemed that I must do my own work. I have therefore decided to put all my trust in God, good, and remember what our beloved Leader says. I am, however, learning to feel more kindly toward everybody, and no longer judge others as formerly. I am truly grateful for the spiritual uplift which has come to me.—F. Campbell, Philadelphia, Pa.
