Some years ago I went to a city in the middle West to take charge of a department in one of the large stores there. The department was said to be running down, and I soon realized that discord among the employees was the main cause. My arrival only aggravated this trouble, and my employers advised that I discharge some of the employees—all, if necessary—and begin anew. But this did not seem right, as many of them had worked there faithfully from fifteen to twenty-five years.

At the family hotel where I was living, I had become attached to a woman who was a Christian Scientist. We shared the same table in the dining-room, and one evening after a very discouraging day I told her my troubles. She was so verykind and sympathetic that when she advised me to have help in Christian Science I was at once interested. The next day things seemed to come to a climax, and I felt I must get help somewhere or give up and come back East. I left the store in the middle of the rush hours and sought a practitioner, and in my first brief interview with her she pointed me to the light of divine Love which has been to me a guiding star ever since. I went to her several times, with the result that my troubles were overcome and the business cares that had always weighed so heavily on me became a pleasure. When I married a year later and came East, it was with deep regret that I left my work and the dear friends in that city.

Previous to this I had many serious illnesses, and had been operated on a few years before for tubercular peritonitis. I had been warned by the doctors to be very careful, and to check any return of the trouble directly. In the spring of 1910, while visiting in Malden, I was taken with most acute pains. My mother was with me, and the old fear possessed us, but I felt that here was a test for me. I endured the pain over night, then called a Christian Science practitioner, who came to me early in the morning. Later, I got up, dressed, and came home to Roslindale, much against the advice of my mother and friends, but I knew that divine Love would care for me. It was a long trip, but when I got home I went to bed, read the chapter called "Recapitulation" in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and went to sleep. The next day I got up and went to a practitioner for treatment. After that I had no trouble, nor has there been any pain to remind me of the old intestinal trouble. The fear of it is completely destroyed!
