Through the power of Truth as made known in Christian Science...

Through the power of Truth as made known in Christian Science I have been healed of sin. Truth has freed me from a belief in evil, the most relentless master, from which I seemed unable to extricate myself. Many times had I tried by the use of will-power to stop these evil practices, but with no effect. Having been reared in the West, on the plains of South Dakota among cowboys and rough associates, it may be readily seen that my surroundings were not conductive to moral and spiritual growth, to refinement or to culture of any kind, and my condition became even worse after I joined the South Dakota Volunteers at the time of the outbreak of the Spanish-American war. Later we were sent to the Philippine Islands, where I spent a year and a half of rough life among the soldiers. Eventually my health began to fail. I was very much troubled with what the doctors called asthma and heart trouble, the condition being a very distressing one.

While paying a visit to my relatives in Berlin, Canada, I became interested in Christian Science, and began its study. Locating in an adjoining town, I received treatment from a practitioner, and immediately began to improve. I noticed that my physical healing was in proportion to my moral reform. I found that the treatment was healing me of the liquor and smoking habits, also of the use of profane language. I learned that fear, hatred, malice, and all sensual habits were enemies which caused my miserable condition; that, as these were destroyed, step by step I gained my freedom, physically and mentally. I am thankful to say that, through a slight understanding of Christian Science, my thought is being elevated, my mentality clarified, my consciousness purified, and my character Christianized. After nine years of constant study of the Bible, Science and Health, and of all the authorized Christian Science literature, combined with the faithful and patient help of a practitioner, I am enjoying good health, and am now expressing what it had always been my great desire to become, a loyal Christian Scientist and a useful man in the world.

I cannot close this testimony without voicing my deep sense of gratitude to God, and my profound respect and love for Mrs. Eddy, through whose self-abnegation and faithful, untiring efforts to spread the gospel of Truth to all humanity, it has been possible for me to realize this wonderful degree of salvation.
