You say that "in the most beautiful and healthful portions of our city, where no poverty obtains and the Christian Scientists are strong, there are at the present time so many cases of scarlet fever as to amount almost to an epidemic."

You might have made a stronger statement than this. You might have said that according to Biblical teaching God, who is even greater than a Christian Science community, is everywhere present; that no place can be found where God is not, and yet disease prevails.

David said, "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me." War, calamity, and epidemic besiege those who do not realize the divine, unseen presence sufficiently to avail themselves of His protecting care, while those who are awake to the divine presence find peace and health. It has been so in all ages of the world. One individual does not merit and reap the reward of the righteous because of his neighbor's goodness. He must merit his own salvation, he must merit his own pardon, deserve his own immunity, before it is granted him by a just and allwise Providence. Not because God is unwilling to save us from our distresses, but because we cannot be saved from them until we open our minds to spiritual truth and close them against that which is opposed to God.
