I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her teaching of Christian Science, for her explanation of God as Spirit, as Love; and, because man is made in the image and likeness of God, he "is not material; he is spiritual" (Science and Health, p. 468). My concept of God had been man-made. In some mysterious way he was said to be a God of love, but also a God of vengeance and eternal punishment. This had been so emphasized that the balance was overwhelmingly with the latter, and I lived in constant fear—fear of everything. When I took up the study of singing, a succession of annoying colds was an almost constant experience, and because I had a supposedly inherited tendency to colds, I though I could not escape them.

Four years ago, while studying singing in Berlin, Germany, I found myself unable to continue my work because of these colds, and having exhausted all medical mean, Christian Science was suggested to me by a good friend, though not a Scientist. I hesitated, however, because of my prejudice against what I thought it to be, but I was so sorely in need of relief that I visited a practitioner. She told me in a simple, direct way what Christian Science really teaches, and soon I knew that this was the truth I had been seeking all my life. At once I was able to go on with my work, and am gaining more and more freedom as my understanding of this blessed truth unfolds.

Words cannot express my joy that I have inherited this great gift of the Father, that I can realize in some measure, now, the great love which "the Father hath bestowed upon us." I am sincerely grateful to all that has helped me on the way, whether this help has come through verbal explanation or through Christian Science literature.
