Although not a member of any Christian Science organization,...
Although not a member of any Christian Science organization, I deem it a duty to give testimony at this time to the undeniable fact that Christian Science is a very potent factor in the affairs of men. About two years ago I had a serious attack of rheumatism in my right shoulder and arm, including my hand, which incapacitated me for successfully attending to the requirements of business. Having some knowledge of Christian Science, derived from the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, a copy of which I carried in my grip, being a traveling man, I resorted to it for relief, but was helped only temporarily. I then realized that something must come to my aid soon, as I was unable to sleep because of the severe pain and it was with great difficulty I could turn over in bed; in fact, I could hardly hold a pencil when it was necessary to write, which was the main feature of my business. In the absence of any visible avenue of escape, I bought an alleged infallible cure for rheumatism, but after taking four or five doses according to directions, my stomach rebelled and I was unable to eat. I then threw away the medicine, and wrote my wife to ask the practitioner who on a prior occasion had healed me of a painful toothache to treat me.
Being separated by about two thousand miles, it took nearly four days for a letter to reach home, but the real source of the help was omnipresent, as the fifth night I slept soundly and in the morning could dress without difficulty. I soon regained normal conditions, and now have no more use for material means, since the spiritual are available and reliable. I feel very grateful to the one from whom has come to us the knowledge of this healing truth, we who have all these years been worshiping at the shrine of matter, ignorant of the real fact and source of life. To all who may be halting between two opinions, as to the truth or error of Christian Science, yet are honestly seeking light and believing there must be truth somewhere,—to such let me say, Throw off the mask of pride and selfrighteousness, and investigate Christian Science for yourselves.—J. A. SWIFT, Fort Scott, Kan.
