It is recorded that Jesus said to a man sick of the palsy,...
It is recorded that Jesus said to a man sick of the palsy, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee;" to which he added, "Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?" Our beloved Leader also tells us on page 404 of Science and Health that "healing the sick and reforming the sinner are one and the same thing in Christian Science. Both cures require the same method and are inseparable in Truth."
When I first turned to Christian Science for help, I was in a pitiable condition, physically, morally, and mentally; I was literally steeped in selfishness; malice, envy, suspicion, and distrust were constant mental companions, and to sensuality and lust I had not been a stranger in years, all of which evils had produced marked results upon the body. My stomach refused to accept ordinary food, the sleepless, weary nights were spent in anxious fretting, and often I staggered on the street like a drunken man, from imperfect heart action; I was so nervous that frequently I was obliged to get up from the desk and go out into the street for a change of air and scene. In addition to all this I was wearing two pairs of glasses for what was pronounced a very serious condition of the eyes. I had been told by a prominent physician that the altitude of Denver was too high and that I would be forced to seek a lower level. I was in very deed consumed with fears and depressed to the extent of profound melancholy, with little if any hope, and almost without God in the world.
But through the purifying, uplifting, and redeeming power of divine Truth, as revealed to suffering and sinning humanity in the pages of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the illuminating light which its teachings throw upon the Bible, and in not only studying these books but insistently desiring that their every statement might be made my very own, prayerfully intent upon knowing the will of God and His will only, these mental and physical disabilities have been entirely removed, and this is the effectual healing which Christian Science is doing in the world today. It is not merely the taking from us of a sense of great pain and distress; it is not merely dissipating our anxieties, worries, and fears; it is not merely raising up and relieving the sorrowing and afflicted, but it is Christ, Truth, the redeemer, coming to the consciousness, transforming and regenerating the carnal nature, until all that is unlike good is purged away; exemplifying what the Master said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." This is the "making whole" process which accompanies the activity of healing in Christian Science, and is the fruit of the tree of life. Our beloved Leader says on page 186 of our text-book, "Christian Science destroys material beliefs through the understanding of Spirit, and the thoroughness of this work determines health." To the extent that the temptation to be sick, to sin, or be discordant, is put behind us momentarily, do we rise into that higher and holier consciousness, even to the mount of demonstration. I feel and know that I am a living witness to the power and efficacy of divine Truth, as revealed in Christian Science, to heal the sick and sinning, and I would most lovingly and tenderly direct the seeking thought to the pages of our text-book, knowing that if one will study it patiently and conscientiously in an unprejudiced state of mind, even as a child, that whether they be burdened with the evidence of some so-called incurable disease, whether they be distracted, worried, or discouraged, or it may be bowed beneath some load of grief, there will come into their tossed and troubled life a joy, peace, and rest such as they have never known; their physical and mental burdens will leave them, and one day, as they are faithful and obedient, as they listen for the "still small voice" of our Father, saying, "This is the way, walk ye in it," they will awake to the fact that they are free,—scientifically healed!
