AMONG THE CHURCHES

With services beautiful in their simplicity, the handsome church edifice of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Walnut street, west of Fortieth, was dedicated yesterday [June 4], when upward of fifteen hundred persons attended. Although the edifice has been in use a year, the formal dedicatory services were deferred until yesterday in obedience to an inflexible rule of the church, which does not permit of its dedication until every cent of indebtedness incurred by its construction has been liquidated. The structure and the spacious lot on which it is situated cost one hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars, and the congregation, in addition to raising this sum, exceeded it by several hundred dollars. Three services, all of which were identical in character, were held at 11 a.m., and 3:30 and 8 p.m. The following telegram was sent yesterday to the Board of Directors of The Mother Church, Boston:—

"On this day of the dedication of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Philadelphia, we the members wish to express to you the deepfelt joy with which we humbly consecrate our desires and efforts toward making this a church in its highest spiritual sense. We would also express to you our united appreciation of your unselfish labors in behalf of the cause, and our loyalty to The Mother Church."

The church edifice is one of the handsomest in the city. Tons of steel structural material were used in its construction, while the exterior is finished in white plaster, with roof of red tile. The interior is finished in good taste, the seats of natural oak being arranged in a semicircle and slightly pitched. The auditorium comfortably seats twelve hundred persons.
