The statement is made that Christian Science denies the atoning work of Christ. Had our critic studied the chapter on the atonement in Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, he would see that, while differing from some theologians on the interpretation of the "sacrament," she consistently holds to the Scriptural teachings as she understands them, the results of her teachings being indisputable proof of their spiritual source. The personal Jesus was the human manifestation of the spiritual, eternal Christ, and in the flesh he demonstrated the perfect life, being the perfect example for us and showing what the divine power can accomplish; while Christian Science, by showing how Jesus did his work, enables his followers, in so far as they understand it, to do likewise. Jesus' sacrifice, as well as proving his great love for mankind, also demonstrates and makes clear certain facts concerning truth and the Science of Christianity that were necessary for man to understand before he could attain to the perfect spiritual life by working out his own salvation.

Christian Science teaches that sin is no part of God's creation or plan, and therefore has no real or permanent existence. Nothing is real and eternal that God did not create, and if it were real it could never be destroyed. The fact that it can be destroyed or overcome proves its unreality. This teaching we believe to be wholly in accord with Scripture.
