GOD'S ONENESS

Christian Science strongly emphasizes the great Scriptural truths; i.e., that there is but one creator, God, and that man in His image reflects the one creative Mind. To be logical and consistent with this fundamental truth of being, we must also recognize that there are not creators many, that man is not himself a creator, cannot multiply himself, but in increasing degree must ever unfold in the image, the power, splendor, and perfection of his Maker.

In harmony and in scientific agreement with the acceptance of but one creator, we must acknowledge but one law or instinct of self-preservation, the instinct and law of the one self, one Ego,—God, who is ever preserving His own harmony, divinity, and spiritual reflection in man and the universe. If we sift discords among brethren,—and by the word brethren we mean all mankind,—if we trace lawsuits, strifes, frictions, dishonest business competitions, wars, religious schisms, etc., to the bottom, we shall find that in almost every case the instigator of all the trouble is a false sense of self-preservation based upon the belief of selves many, minds many, gods many; instead of the great truth of all the ages, that there is but one Ego, one Mind, one God, and that all men reflect this one.

As there is but one creator, there can be but one kind of law, God's law. It therefore becomes obvious that man is not a law maker, nor even a law interpreter; he simply reflects God's law and the one divine interpretation thereof. We are all familiar with this hope-filled saying, "Progress is the law of God" (Science and Health, p. 233). Man's only reflection of law and its interpretation is, must be, eternally progressive, with never a return to positions outgrown. In like manner we acknowledge but one will,—the divine will, the will which Jesus acknowledged and bowed to in absolute surrender of any belief in a will apart from God. This divine will is the will of each and all of God's children alike, seeing that all reflect the one God. Moreover, it is the only will of man, the only will of the universe, and it is expressed in benevolence, justice, mercy, and peace, since it is the will of divine Love.
