LIFE'S ARMAGEDDON

What mean the strange alarms that 'round earth sweep,
The secret fears of some impending doom,
That rise now here, now there, and will not sleep,
But spread abroad their sick'ning, subtle gloom?

And what, in truth, portends the breaking light,
The swift, sweet light that floods the whole world o'er,
That fills men's hearts with peace and joy and might,
And to some presence bright throws wide the door?

'Tis this: life's Armageddon strife has come:
In city's mart, in desert, plain, and hill,
In hearts of all is heard war's muffled drum,
The silent crash that sends o'er earth its thrill.

Where'er Truth leads her white-clad army out,
Where'er Love's swift and piercing darts are flung,
There error's force falls deep in utter rout,
There blighting hate's long-'waited knell is rung.

The world's wide war is on; vast armies clash;
But no man dies: no sound but error's fall
Answers Love's clarion-call with might aflash—
For e'en in battle's shock God holds us all.
