I did not take up the study of Christian Science for...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, although I was in poor health at that time. The testimonies of healing heard at the Wednesday evening meetings and from friends did not impress me, but when I was given Science and Health to read, then I found what I had been looking for all my life, namely, God. I had been a regular attendant at church and Sunday School, and also a teacher in Sunday School; but many of my questions were unanswered and blind belief did not satisfy me—I wanted proof. I could never be persuaded to join any church, although I attended one for fifteen years. I did not see that it made my friends any better to do so, and I did not want to join unless it would change me for the better.
From the time I began to read Science and Health I could see that Christian Science is the truth, and I began to apply it, to prove or demonstrate it. I procured a copy of the text-book, also a Quarterly, and with the Bible I began the study. Then my diseases, one by one, left me, some of them without any effort on my part. A serious throat trouble which I had every winter was one of the first to leave; also backache, bowel trouble, a growth in the nose which a doctor had said would have to be burned out, and a tendency to take cold; all these ills left me without treatment. Stomach trouble in a very severe form yielded to treatment, and with the overcoming of these diseases, health, strength, and flesh were regained. My friends noticed the change, and when they were told what had brought it about, one and all admitted that there must be something in Christian Science,—that I was not the same person that I used to be, and that the change was wonderful.
Yes, I have found what I wanted; namely, a religion that can be applied to the overcoming of all evil, discord, sin, and disease; a God who is not afar off, but near at hand, here and now. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 34 of Science and Health that "demonstration is Immanuel, or God with us," and I have had proof through demonstration that God is with us today. I am indeed grateful to God, also to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for Christian Science, and I hope that I may live its teachings.
