During the summer of 1904 I was taken with a cold...
During the summer of 1904 I was taken with a cold which developed into a severe cough. For three months I was unable to get relief, except for a brief period, from materia medica, and we were eventually brought to the conclusion that it was a serious case of lung trouble. By this time I was a physical wreck, and the consolation which I offered to members of my family was that at the rate I was going the struggle would soon be over; but having now reached man's extremity, I was ready to appeal to a higher power.
Through a number of influences I was induced to visit a Christian Science practitioner. Upon my first visit she gave me a very encouraging talk, and told me that I did not have to be sick, a statement which at that time I did not understand. She, however, advised me to think the matter over, and call on her again should I desire treatment. I did so, two or three days later, and I was treated for about one week. To outward appearance there was very little improvement, but on my way home after the fourth visit I realized what a Christian Science treatment is, that it is something which is not revealed to flesh and blood, but must be discerned spiritually; and I knew I was a free man. On entering the house I told my wife and daughter the good news, and we all were very happy and I might say awed, for none of my family up to this time had ever given Christian Science any serious consideration. Since my healing I have enjoyed more than four years of almost constant good health, and I have been able to perform a reasonable day's work with as little fatigue as when in my teens, over a half century ago. I would also state that almost simultaneously with the above healing I was freed from a chronic bowel disorder contracted during my service in the Civil War, although I had no special treatment for this.
Since taking up the study of Christian Science, myself and other members of my family have received much physical help and manifold spiritual blessings. During the time I was under treatment I applied myself diligently to the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to whom my heart goes out in grateful acknowledgment for her inestimable work in behalf of mankind. I have been a member of one of the Christian Science churches of Portland for almost four years. I give this testimony gladly, gratefully, trusting that it may afford a ray of light to some wanderer in the wilderness.
