Our critic is guilty of discourtesy to Christian Scientists...
Telegraph-Herald
Our critic is guilty of discourtesy to Christian Scientists in referring to them as Eddyites. They are members of an established church known as "Church of Christ, Scientist." This church embraces people of intelligence, refinement, education, and good business and social standing. They are conscious of the fact that the teaching which they have accepted is not an "ism" but demonstrable truth, based upon positive Principle, and that it has accomplished results in the uplifting of humanity that are not excelled by the teachings of any denomination of Christians.
Every effort of every Christian Scientist is for the benefit of humanity in all that this includes and implies. Those who have become acquainted with Christian Scientists know them to be Christian in their individual lives and character, in their business and social affairs, and in their influence with their fellow-men. If this teaching be a "fallacy," then the word is subject to definitions heretofore unheard of; and if this be a correct term to use, then the world needs a great deal more by way of fallacy. It certainly needs that by way of Christlike teaching which can see the good in others and is willing to concede an influence for good, separate and apart from any one particular denomination or teaching.
The "inner light" of which this critic speaks in connection with Mrs. Eddy is not a term used by Christian Scientists. There is, however, a "light" which can be properly defined only as Mrs. Eddy defines it, "the illumination of spiritual sense;" and again, "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies" (Science and Health, pp. 461, 162). In common with other Christians, Christian Scientists recognize Christ as "the light of the world," and their constant effort is to obtain more of this Christ-consciousness, that they may impart good to humanity.
