I am wondering if our clerical critic is prepared to accept...

Fort Worth (Tex.) Record

I am wondering if our clerical critic is prepared to accept the answer to his question, and I say this advisedly and out of all kindness, having in mind some experiences I have had in an effort to establish certain healings. While I am entirely in sympathy with the publication of testimonials of Christian Science healing in the Christian Science periodicals, I have despaired of being able to convince any one as to the healing who is religiously, medically, philosophically, or otherwise opposed to the teachings of Christian Science and to the acceptance of the possibility of the Christ-healing today. To illustrate, a woman had been for a considerable length of time treated by a physician who pronounced her case tuberculosis of the lungs. After she had exhausted her faith in medical treatment, she turned to Christian Science as a forlorn hope, and was healed. The doctor was called upon to certify to the fact that he had treated the woman for tuberculosis. He declined, affirming that it was a case of mistaken diagnosis, for the fact that she had did cured by Christian Science was in evidence that she did not have tuberculosis. If she had had tuberculosis she could not have been cured in that manner!

A noted physician, and very efficient diagnostician, made a careful examination of a patient, told him that he had a well advanced case of Bright's disease, and that nothing could be done for him. The man was afterward treated by Christian Science. He went back to the eminent physician in order to determine the result. The doctor was not satisfied with one examination but made another, then very humbly said, "For the first time in my practice I have been mistaken in my diagnosis: You could not have had Bright's disease, for you have none now."

In the pressure of such attitudes of thought, upon what grounds could any Christian Scientist establish a case of healing by testimonies. I find in my own experience that those who are unwilling to accept the teachings of Christian Science are not prepared to believe any testimony respecting it. Those to whom the teaching seems incredible look upon the healing as impossible, and it is usually a waste of time to try to convince a man against his will.
