THE EFFICACY OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

In last week's issue of the Sentinel there appeared the testimony of a lady at Boulder, Col., which is a typical statement of what Christian Science has been and is doing in the way of healing mankind. It may not, therefore, be out of place to analyze this particular testimony and call attention to some features of it, in order to impress these salient points upon the attention of those who are in search of health.

For twenty years prior to her healing in Christian Science, this lady had been in bondage to pain, the six different physicians who were consulted during this time giving no hope of relief from the intense suffering she endured. Just previous to her seeking help through Christian Science, her family physician, who had made a careful study of the case, gave her a thorough examination, and told her that there was no remedy known to medical science for her ills; also that so long as she lived she would be a great sufferer,—in short, she was incurable. Without going into details of the diseases with which Mrs. Moore was said to be afflicted, it may be noted in passing that at least some of them were such as are usually classed as organic; although we understand that even the question as to which diseases are organic and which are functional is still in abeyance in medical circles, and "who shall decide when doctors disagree, and soundest casuists doubt?" to quote an eighteenth century satirist. Let it suffice that the family physician said, according to a confirmatory statement by Mrs. Moore's husband, that "she had organic trouble, which could not be cured; that cases similar to hers were very rare; that there was no remedy known for the disease; that complications would follow, and the result would be terrible."

At this time a friend advised Mrs. Moore to try Christian Science, and, having exhausted the resources of the physicians, she accepted this advice. She procured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and through the study of this book she was healed, and has since remained well. The recital of these facts in the testimonies referred to above is in no way sensational, but the facts themselves are of the greatest importance, for it is a somewhat popular belief that Christian Science is helpful only for those who have little or nothing the matter with them. Here, however, is a case—and there are hundreds like it—in which a disease diagnosed as organic by one who stands high in his profession as a physician, has been healed in Christian Science; and healed, moreover, by the study of Science and Health.
