Nearly twenty years ago divine Love led me to accept Christian Science, and never once in all those years have I had reason to doubt but that it is the Christ-idea made manifest to mortals. I came to love the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and I find myself loving her more and more from day to day and year to year, just in proportion to my growth, knowledge, and demonstration. For years I struggled alone with my problem, but the recollection of the struggles has vanished in the grateful consciousness that I now count all my loved ones as "within the fold." To recount the specific blessings for which I am truly grateful would be an impossible task, but I wish to tell of one experience in particular which may help some other weary pilgrim.

This particular case was one of mental surgery. About the middle of January, 1905, I fell heavily upon the ice and severely injured my shoulder. The injury was so serious that I had no use whatever of my left arm. In Science and Health (p. 401) Mrs. Eddy says, "Until the advancing age admits the efficacy and supremacy of Mind, it is better for Christian Scientists to leave surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon." So I called a physician, who worked on the joint for half an hour, but without the desired result. Again, on the following day and a great many days after, I had the same experience. The matter dragged along until June, when another physician was called to assist the first, and together they tried unsuccessfully on three different occasions to replace the arm. No one could be more considerate or conscientious in the endeavor to relieve me than these two doctors, and I shall always feel a sense of gratitude to them for their efforts.

Without any outside help I was able to overcome all pain, inflammation, and swelling during this period of pulling, twisting, and wrenching. I slept soundly at night, and was affected not at all by the experience except that I was not able to dress myself or to perform the usual household duties. About this time we were told by one of the doctors that the only hope of the operation being successfully performed was for me to go to a hospital, take an anesthetic, and be put in a brace. I decided to do neither, but on July 3, accompanied by my daughter, I went to a Christian Science practitioner in Grand Rapids, Mich. I stated the case to her, and she lovingly told me what I already believed to be true, viz., that "with God all things are possible." Within a few days I was surprised to find that the demonstration had been made, and I am thankful to say that I have never experienced the slightest difficulty with the shoulder since then. These physical benefits seem great, and they are, yet they are the very least of the benefits we may know if we will accept this beautiful truth for our own and abide by its teachings.
