Being a young student of Christian Science, and desiring...

Being a young student of Christian Science, and desiring to do all I can to further the cause of Truth, the words of our Leader to her students (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 155), came to me as a command: "Methinks, were they to contemplate the universal charge wherewith divine Love has entrusted us, in behalf of a suffering race, they would contribute oftener to the pages of this swift vehicle of scientific thought [The Christian Science Journal]; for it reaches a vast number of earnest readers, and seekers after Truth."

Christian Science reached me through the active work of Scientists in the town where I resided. In a wretched state of health, brought on I believe by constant association with those who were very ill, cases in which I saw no relief given either by religion or materia medica; looking to the grave as the only hope of rest, weary of material ways and means, I first heard of this healing truth. A little later I was taken to a Christian Science service in London. I bought a copy of Science and Health, and with this key found the Scriptures a well-spring of Life. In a short time I was healed of sleeplessness of twenty years' standing; later, of bowel trouble of still longer duration; also of a nervous and irritable temperament, of selfishness, and the "beam" in the eye. The healing was not instantaneous, but very slow. When I was first helped, the practitioner sent me away with these words from our text-book (p. 242): "Self-love is more opaque than a solid body. In patient obedience to a patient God, let us labor to dissolve with the universal solvent of Love the adamant of error,—self-will, self-justification, and self-love,—which wars against spirituality and is the law of sin and death." This I thought strange and unnecessary. Again, whenever I read the commencement of the chapter on Christian Science practice, which is the starting-point of all healing, I saw nothing in it to do with healing; but the time came when I understood their meaning.

I realized that all my life I had been subject to fear, and I learned in Christian Science that the cure for fear is to "know the truth." I am deeply grateful to our Leader for the Lesson-Sermons, and for all our publications; also to the many who have rebuked and uplifted.
