Union
At a meeting of the California Medical Society, Christian Science was referred to as being one of the forms of "quackery" which today threatens to lessen the physician's opportunity for earning a livelihood. In this connection it should be remembered that Christian Science, like every true religious movement, makes it an object to uplift and bless mankind, but not to injure; and really nothing good and useful could be injured by its teachings, since they are but the logical application of the doctrines of Jesus and his disciples, which must lead to moral and physical well-being wherever they are understood and practised.
Every conscientious physician has as his object the lessening of sickness and suffering, and should rejoice at whatever accomplishes this, whether it comes from his particular school of practice or not. To argue otherwise would be the same as for a clergyman to contend that the practice of goodness and morality were a menace to his profession, because such practice tends to decrease sin, and the fewer sinners there are, the less preaching needed.
Quackery involves deception, and deception is injurious both to the one upon whom it is practised and to the one who practises it; but prayer to God involves no deception, and if it is true prayer, can never prove injurious. Then the Christian Scientist who prays for those who request this service is not a quack, and if his understanding of the law of God enables men to live purer and healthier lives, his work should be commended.
