In August, 1906, I spent a few weeks in the country, and there made the acquaintance of some Christian Scientists. I then for the first time heard something positive about this teaching, and felt at once that the way was opening before me for which I had been seeking; for I had of late years taken much interest in religious and philosophical subjects. A copy of Der Herold was lent to me, and I was glad to find that there was a Christian Science practitioner in Frankfort a/M. As soon as I came home I went to see this lady and to buy the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had never thought of joining a religious organization or attending services, but I accepted the lady's invitation and went to the next testimonial meeting. This step was decisive, for I was so deeply impressed that since then I have hardly ever missed a service.

Although I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, I had several occasions to perceive Truth's blessed influence upon the body, and some months ago I had the following experience. One Sunday, during the service, I found that I could not sing as usual. During the reading of the Lesson-Sermon I tried to realize the nothingness of this false condition, but my understanding was not sufficient—indeed, I could not raise my voice at all, and later I found that even to speak caused me some difficulty. This was followed by distress in breathing, and I felt as if the lungs were affected. I began at once to work in Christian Science, to turn my thoughts to the truth of being; and I was relieved somewhat. I, however, asked a practitioner for treatment, and in the course of the same day the difficulty in breathing was nearly removed, and two days later it had wholly disappeared, although I was obliged to be much out of doors and the weather was very bad. The trouble with my voice was more obstinate, for it was about eight weeks before I was all right again.

According to material law, so called, there was hereditary predisposition to this ailment, so I am very grateful for this experience and for the help that Christian Science gave me. I thank God that I have gained some understanding of man's real life; and I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her pure striving, which enabled her to find the way to God and to make it plain for humanity.
