THE LECTURES

Prof. Hermann S. Hering lectured on the subject of Christian Science Dec. 20. He was introduced by Judge Edward Mayes, who said.—

It is now somewhat more than forty years since Mrs. Eddy promulgated that view of religion which is known as Christian Science. Since that time it has progressed. It has encountered much opposition, and has confronted many enemies—a fact which in itself means nothing, since I believe that to have been the history of all new religious movements. However that may be, it has so far recommended itself that its doctrines have met the hearty approval and the zealous advocacy of a vast multitude of the best and most cultivated people in this country and in Europe.

Whether one accepts the special views of its adherents or not, it cannot be denied that their plane is sure and lofty, and their aims most praiseworthy. To make men happier, to make them healthier in body and mind, by a splendid mission; and when this end is sought by the dissemination of a religious philosophy which is consistent with our accepted ideas of the true God and of Christianity, most certainly its teacher is entitled to the careful attention, and will receive the serious thought, of all right feeling and right thinking people.— Correspondence.
