I have received so much help from Christian Science that I feel it a pleasant task to give my testimony to the readers of the Sentinel. In November, 1904, I began to have trouble with one of my eyes. It grew worse all the time, until I could not use it at all,A correction was made in the 1910 Sentinel: "We regret that in the testimony of Mary F. Cummins, published in the Sentinel of Fed. 26, the original statement regarding the affected eye, that she 'could not use it at all,' was, through an error, mistakenly made to read, 'could not see with it at all.'" and was forbidden by the oculist whom I consulted, to use the other eye. The conditions were very distressing, and one doctor said that a cataract was forming and that there was also a growth which caused the eye to protrude.
After trying various doctors and specialists, and receiving no benefit, I at last, in October, 1905, went to a Christian Science practitioner, and in five days I was at work in my studio, designing and painting china, and have never had to favor my eyes in any way since that time. The affected eye began to change and be less inflamed with the first treatment, so that I was fully convinced that Christian Science healed me. I then purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and began to study it, and gradually various other troubles of years' standing let go their hold and left me rejoicing. Among these were gall-stones, catarrh, asthma, etc., and my health is now better than ever before in my sixty-three years. I am thankful to divine Love, the only power, and to Mrs. Eddy, who has shown us how to avail ourselves of man's spiritual inheritance and prove what it means to be really the children of God.
To add one more testimony to the value of absent treatment in Christian Science, I will relate a personal experience. After my own wonderful healing, I soon found that I could demonstrate the truth and help myself to overcome the various discordant conditions which so often beset this mortal life. From this it was an easy step to the helping of others, and results would seem to show success in absent treatment for my own loved ones. At one o'clock, on the afternoon of Nov. 24, 1908, I received a telegram from my son in a far western state, saying that his only child, a daughter twelve years old, was dangerously sick with acute lung trouble. I canceled various engagements by telephone, and taking with me the Bible and Science and Health, I went to my studio, where I remained during the afternoon, using all the understanding of Christian Science I had gained in those three years in treating the sick girl. I realized the infinite power of divine Truth and Love, and when I rejoined the family I felt sure that the child would live.
